My Senior Show

So yesterday, Monday, I had my senior show along with Alison and Brittany Durkee (behind.the.lens, check her out!).  Here are the images that I displayed along with my artist statement!

Scenes From A Memory
By Corey Cross

The images displayed represent vague scenes from a memory—they look somewhat familiar, yet remain enigmatic. My photographs are inspired by everything outdoors regarding nature and some things scientific. The feelings and emotions evoked from my photographs are something that I feel a strong connection to.  I want the viewer to feel as connected to the photograph as I do; I want them to search for something from their memory and relate it to the image being viewed.

It is evident that I like to use a wide-angle lens, trying to capture everything that I want in a single frame.  Using both extensive and shallow depth of field, I want to point the viewer’s attention to certain details that might be overlooked at first glance.  Texturally, all of the images go together and provide the viewer a sense of actually being able to feel the image that is displayed.

From the beginning moments of becoming a photographer, working with black and white film has really led the way in my creation of more interesting photographs.  Gaining inspiration from Michael Kenna and taking what I’ve learned from the film process, I apply that knowledge into a digital image.  I envision what the picture will look like in black and white as I am framing it and how the available light will be transformed.  I feel as though a picture in black and white has a lot of character.  There are so many more things that you can see in a black and white photograph versus a color photograph.  The contrast between the deep blacks and the grays mixed with white make the viewing pleasure greater, in my opinion.

I find it important to have my camera by my side almost at all times.  Through my experiences, it is when I least expect it that I will create a fantastic photograph.  That is why I love photography so much.  It is a great pleasure for me to have a camera by my side, waiting to press the shutter and capture that elusive image.

Central State

I went out with a buddy of mine, Evan, to take some shots of Central State Hospital...yeah yeah, where all the crazies are!  The abandoned buildings are really cool, unfortunately we could only get into one of them...and it was a factory, but still awesome!  Here are some shots:
